What is Acupuncture?

For over 3,000 years, acupuncture has been practiced in China as a unique healing tool. Today, it is widely used in the United States as well as all over the world. More and more people are realizing the healing benefits that Chinese Medicine can offer.

In Chinese Medicine, no symptom or complaint is viewed in isolation. Rather, the body, mind, and emotions are evaluated together. The goal of acupuncture is to create harmony within the body by restoring the flow of “Qi” (pronounced Chee), thereby allowing the body to heal itself.

Qi is the life force involved in the whole body’s metabolism as well as the defensive nature that the body naturally has in order to protect itself from invading organisms. Qi collects in the organs and travels through energy channels in the body called “meridians.” In Chinese Medicine, disease occurs when the circulation of Qi is blocked, whether by injury, heat, cold, damp, stress, or any other influences. By redirecting the flow of Qi acupuncture can help restore health, prevent illness and create harmony.

Acupuncture is known as a complimentary medicine because it supports other forms of healing like, Chiropractic, Massage, Physical Therapy, and Western Medicine. Acupuncture can even help to alleviate side effects from Western drugs.

How does Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Work?

Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin, sterile disposable needles into certain predetermined points. These acupuncture points are located on the meridians that run along the body. Different locations are selected depending on the health problem and the person’s constitution. Once the needles are in place, the person lays quietly listening to music or in silence, depending on the person’s preference. Most people are pleased to find that the treatments are pleasant and look forward to their sessions.

Although no one knows exactly how acupuncture points stimulate the body to heal, we do know that it strengthens the immune system and can increase T-cell counts. Acupuncture can also release pain-killing endorphins and can play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. Endorphins, released through acupuncture, not only relax the whole body but can also regulate serotonin in the brain, which plays a big role in our moods.

These treatments can break the spasm cycle which muscles can get “caught” in, causing unrelenting tightness and pain. Acupuncture works with our “life energy” which is similar to our electrical circuitry that runs throughout our body. It taps into specific points along this circuitry and balances the energy connecting all of our major organs.  Acupuncture works without drugs or chemicals.
